Anaheim Ducks' Best Choices for Next Captain - The Hockey Writers Latest News, Analysis & More
Wednesday, May 1, 2024
During separate interviews on Monday, April 22, Anaheim Ducks head coach Greg Cronin and general manager Pat Verbeek addressed questions about the team's leadership with a unified answer — they need a new captain. The Ducks are one of five teams in the NHL playing without a captain, with the position held vacant since Ryan Getzlaf's retirement at the end of the 2021-22 season. After their early expansion years, the list of Ducks captains reads like the who's who of team history. The players who have worn the 'C' since the 1996-97 season include Paul Kariya, Steve Rucchin, Teemu Selanne, Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, and Getzlaf, who held the role for 12 seasons.

Ducks' Trevor Zegras responds to constant Canadiens trade rumors
Thursday, April 25, 2024
Trevor Zegras is fresh off the worst season of his professional career in 2023-24. The former No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft was excellent in his rookie and sophomore seasons, amassing 126 points in 156 games and looking like the future of the Anaheim Ducks. One team that continues to be linked to the American is the Montreal Canadiens, and Zegras admitted he isn't thrilled about the constant rumors. “You see it,” Zegras told The Athletic's Eric Stephens recently.

Oilers Represent Corey Perry's Best Chance at Second Cup - The Hockey Writers Edmonton Oilers Latest News, Analysis & More
Thursday, April 25, 2024
Corey Perry finds himself in the unique and privileged position of getting to compete for his elusive second career championship in this season's Stanley Cup Playoffs. Few could have predicted that, let alone that he would sign another NHL contract midway through the season, after an abrupt dismissal and contract termination by the Chicago Blackhawks in November. After an early and mid-career run of success with the Anaheim Ducks, which included a championship in 2007 and several additional appearances in the Western Conference Final, Perry has returned to the NHL's final round a surprising three times – with the Dallas Stars in 2020, the Montreal Canadiens in 2021, and Tampa Bay Lightning in 2022 – but suffered defeat in each instance.

Ducks banking on youth, promise and plenty of cap room
Wednesday, April 24, 2024
Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek may not have the commanding presence or steely stare of his former teammate and front-office mentor Steve Yzerman, but the feisty, fiery forward turned first-time GM will certainly be the center of attention this summer, when the Ducks figure to be a major player in the offseason. “We want to win now, we don't want to go through this again,” said Frank Vatrano, who is coming off a career season with 37 goals at age 31. The Ducks entered the year a bit thin and became downright emaciated by injuries and departures via trade, most notably the versatility, value and veteran leadership of Adam Henrique (who is among the likely free agents this summer, by the way).

In today's NHL rumors rundown, the Anaheim Ducks have an offseason plan and their GM isn't afraid to share that plan. Meanwhile, William Nylander is practicing again for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The St. Louis Blues intend to extend Pavel Buchnevich, and will the Montreal Canadiens take a big swing at forward? Ducks 'in a good spot' to compete for a playoff spot next season
Wednesday, April 24, 2024
For the Ducks, it was another season of pain, both literal and figurative, as an injury-marred campaign crashed short of the postseason landing strip yet again. Fortunately, no players, at this time, will require offseason surgery, and defenseman Tristan Luneau has been cleared to play after being off the ice for a calendar year due an infection.
